Just Announced: Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt w/ The Shakes & The Show is in The Rainbow

Memorial Union- Der Rathskeller

4/10/2010 9:00pm

The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt have been described as eccentric, but that’s only just scratching the service. Brooklynn’s TPDR have signed with David Byrne’s Luakabop Records. Their lead singer Neal Fridd dresses in a stuffed animal suit while there is a communal costume box for the crowd to pick from. Quiet Color said, ” In a world where bands have been taking themselves seriously for far too long, this show gave me hope that the people can be unabashedly silly and passionately serious at the same time.” TPDR includes the lead singer who is joined by 10 or so other bandmates, who as the NYTimes said, ” pitch in with everything from singing to rescuing musical instruments from the trash.” TPDR will be releasing their first full-lengh album digitally at the end of february, it has a name so long I will take up space to write it. This show may confuse those people who take themselves to seriously but it’s perfect those who know how to just let loose and get crazy.

The Shakes will be touring with TPDR throughout the spring adding to their antics. One critic said that they are “a fantastic organ-driven rockabilly punk band…that croon and swoon and play awesome Sam Cooke covers.”

Just announced: David Ford w/ TBA 3/13/2010

Memorial Union- Der Rathskeller

3/13/2010 9:30pm

England’s singer/songwriter David Ford released his debut solo album, I sincerely Apologize for all the Trouble I’ve Caused in 2005. It was later signed over to Columbia Records and afterward traveled for the first time throughout the US. His second album Songs for the Road was released to widespread critical acclaim that was even greater than for his first album. With MusicOMH saying, “It is decorated with delicate, sensitive sounding notes and perfectly placed key changes, layered with deep thinking, complex lyrics.” Ford is an independent artist again which seems to be what he feels most comfortable with. He released his latest album in early 2010 and has described the songs as being different from the last two albums because of the “shortness and snappiness.”

Dawes tonight!

Ever since they blew us away at the Daytrotter Barnstormers tour in Lodi, WI, WUD Music and Madison can’t get enough of this quickly rising LA band. Dawes returns to Madison tonight at the Union for FREE show.

Dawes will be playing 2 sets. First, they will be backing opener Jason Boesel and then they’ll play their own set. Finally, headliner Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons will finish off the bill.

Here’s a song from the Lodi show with commentary by WUD Music’s own Ethan Berlin. “This IS great.”

And here’s Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons with “Born Again.”

So come out tonight for what is sure to be a great night of music at Der Rath. Show kicks off at 9. Be there.

Just Announced: Sick of Sarah w/ TBA on Saturday, February 27th

Memorial Union-Der Rathskeller

9:30pm Saturday, February 27th

Minneapolis’s all girl pop punk act, Sick Of Sarah has pushed onto the scene with award after award. Their music has been described as being able to “combine driving electric rock with sympathetic acoustic moments…and they have an ever-present sense of humor.” They said their influences range from Joan Jett to Vanessa Carlton along with many others. Their record label, Adamant has said lead singer, Abisha Uhl, “will sing every song like its the greatest thing anyones ever heard.” After two full lengths and two EPs Sick Of Sarah released their self-titled album on Adamant. They also won Summerfests Best Emerging artist in 2008 after previously winning MTV’s virtual Kaya’s battle of the bands. They also received a “Buzzcatcher” story in Spin Magazine.

Digging in the Crates

Just found this old gem in the ‘crates’ of my iTunes today from one of the more interesting hip-hop groups to emerge out of the early 2000s – Handsome Boy Modeling School

First off – great name. It’s creative. It’s classy. And it made fun of all other rappers during this time. Unfortunately they haven’t done much since 5 years ago. They should though.

Second – it made me rediscover how much better Ocean’s Eleven is than the rest of the Ocean’s movies (unless you are in a European mood then Twelve hits the spot). Yes if you recognize the song that is where it’s from. The scene with Rusty – who eats in next to every scene through out the series – is sitting at the bar with ‘dancers’ behind glass.

If that doesn’t sell it then maybe this will. Quite possibly the greatest title for any hip-hop album ever:

Cheers and keep it classy.

Madison’s Best Dancers

Here are some pictures from last weekend. They’re a few days overdue, but I’ve been super busy, like sitting in Steenbock past midnight busy, and really the only reason you’re seeing them now is because I’m taking a ten minute break from schoolwork.

The Hercules and the Love Affair show was alright. The turnout was a bit disappointing, and Der Rathskeller isn’t the best venue for DJ sets, but given what we were up against, it was fairly successful.

I didn’t see too much of the Occidental Brothers show, but from what I saw it was very good. The was a good energy to the show, the crowd really seemed to like it, and there were a bunch of people dancing. It brought a crowd that usually doesn’t see our shows, so that’s a plus.

“Honey, Let Me Sing You a Song”

This Friday, February 5, check out Der Rathskellar to kick off your weekend with Floridian singer/songwriter Matt Hires; his pop/acoustic sound along with his gentle voice combine to give listeners one sweet set.  Also featured is returning artist Jason Castro of American Idol (2008), and special guest Caitlyn Crosby.  It’s a night sure to induce warm and fuzzies.

Is it hot in here or is it just Orquesta Fuego Latino??  Spice up your Saturday with Madison-based band Orquesta Fuego Latino, a group of musicians native to various locales around the globe.  They will be sure to induce Latin dance euphoria with their mixture of Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue, and Bachata sounds.  Attendees are also in for a special treat, as dancing will be encouraged and small lessons provided by campus’ Latin dance community Los Sobrosos.  Ay caramba!

enjoy,

What is your current musical philosophy?

I used to listen to a lot of underground rap – and still do – but the genre has become a little stale. There are a lot of people out there doing great things in the genre but I look to music that is pushing the limits – which is why I have started to move into more electronic based music and hip-hop where the limits of what has been done before are being pushed.

In terms of hip-hop for me that is exemplified by P.O.S. who constantly releases albums that challenge the listener and bring something that we haven’t heard before. On the other end I enjoy a lot of what the Mad Decent label has put out as well – exploring genres that have not been given the exposure they really deserve, but genres that are on the cutting edge and creating/re-envisioning music as we know it.

What are you currently listening to?

Congorock
Brick Bandits
The Very Best

this is a song about a meat sandwich in dutch. if you can’t handle the eurotrash awesome-ness for the whole three minutes and thirty seconds, just go to 3:10 to see how the dutch dance. i’ve actually witnessed this dance in person in a club.
