Late SXSW pictures and such

Alright so these are reallly late, but for some reason college decided that everything had to be done the week before spring break.  SXSW was one of the greatest experiences I have ever been lucky enough to participate in.  Not only did I get to some amazing bands which I hope to see on the Terrace or in Der Rathskeller but I met some great people in the business, (marketing and journalism for me) who showed me there are a lot of talented people out there and I have more to learn than I could have ever imagined, no matter what field I choose to work in.

Also if any of you get the chance, you absolutely have to see Temper Trap, The Boxer Rebellion, Fanfarlo, Local Native (Surfer Blood was called the Vampire Weekend of the festival but these guys should have been), Fucked up I only got to see one song of theirs but it blew me away.  I actually kept running into this female duo First Aid Kit from Sweden, they were adorable and incredibly talented.  These Are Powers was another great show, the female singer was not only talented but gorgeous and I fell in love with her.   It was the combination of her stage presence and voice that really got me, great personality and her voice was a thing to remember.  Alright I suck at writing about music, but I thought I should mention the great acts before I put up some pictures.  Oh right JJ was fabulous to listen to, but I didn’t actually get to see her since I was to far back.

The Boxer Rebellion (had some great lights)

Mohawk was my favorite venue

Molly before Temper Trap, I could only capture how amazingly excited she was with a picture

Temper Trap (he made love to every song, it was amazing how talented he was on stage)

Frightened Rabbit, yeah I geeked out at this show and I'm not ashamed to admit it

The Boxer Rebellion's lead singer, a hot English guy...what else

Fanfarlo

First Aid Kit, I also saw them at Mohawk

Recap

A quick blog post before we leave this fabulous city that is Austin.  I have been a terrible blogger this past week but in my defense it’s easier said than done.  Right now I actually say anything about SXSW, mostly because I am still in shock/amazed that this festival exists.

The recap of the weekend is:

Most exciting surprise: Temper Trap/ The Boxer Rebellion, these shows were completely electric and I hope to see them again in the midwest if not the Terrace.

Most disappointing: I didn’t have one myself but Gabe says Sleigh Bells, Brigid and John say Best Coast.  For the shows I was planning on seeing I wasn’t disappointed. Though while waiting for Local Natives to play Dutchess Says went on and it was pretty terrible, it just wasn’t my taste and for the last day of sxsw I couldn’t really handle how loud it was.

But we are about to go and this is pretty half-ass but I wanted to write something down before we left the hotel.

We will be back with better awards and statistics, see you all in 24 hours.

that tragic set of charms! MG&V

So I haven’t been a very good blogger, but the MG&V show at the Ale House last night necessitates a post of its own.

Fanfarlo played before them and were excellent, unsurprisin

gly, but the Delta Spirit-Deer Tick-Dawes “supergroup” absolutely blew me away. I claimed at the time that it was the best live show I have ever seen, which may not be entirely true, but that isn’t what matters.

My camera battery failed me, so I don’t have much to share – only a couple pictures and a few seconds of video with no sound. But that’s going to have to do. If you ever, EVER have the chance to see them… do it.

P.S. The closed out the night with 3/4 of Dawes on stage covering a Dawes song. The chorus of “Time Spent In Los Angeles” has been sung by at least one person at all times since then. So good.

Day 2: Ouch

After two 14-hour days of music, all of us here at the WUD Music camp are feeling a little down trodden, but we’re not giving up! Yesterday I saw 13 bands! Here’s the recap of the day

Muzzle of Bees party at Habana Calle (free breakfast burritos, whamp whamp!)

Blair
Strand of Oaks

Both of the bands played solid sets. Definitely check out Blair if you haven’t listened to them yet. Relatively calm way to start off the day (the free food didn’t hurt either).

Paste Magazine Party @ The Galaxy Room

Shearwater: Definitely didn’t disappoint. Also, free 5 hr Energy and dranks.
Fanfarlo: Great band. good show.

Fool’s Gold and Active Child at the Filter Magazine Party. The venue was packed so I watched from right outside, but I could still see and the bands still rocked it. Active Child is a new Music Committee buzz band and they lived up to the hype. Check them out.

Delta Spirit, Dawes (again), and Cymbals Eat Guitars. I’m not too much of Cymbals fan and they nearly blew my eardrums out, but they were high energy performers, so it wasn’t all bad.

The Boxer Rebellion from London, UK was a surprise favorite. They rocked.

The Temper Trap was indescribably fantastic. I have loved this band for months, but I hadn’t seen them until last night because they’re from Australia. Anyways, their show was incendiary. Its rare concert moments like this that make me remember why I love music so much. Seriously. Amazing.

The Temper Trap. Damn.

To finish off the night I headed over to Shout Out Out Out. Wasn’t a huge fan. The Very Best ended the night with a bang.

Ok, more tomorrow.  Hopefully you’ll hear from some other kiddos in the next couple days.

Day 1: The Streets Love Us, Dawg.

After cleaning up the Chariot and ourselves, we hopped on the Shuttle to head downtown.  Despite heavy traffic, our driver ‘Fontaine’ kept us entertained with some great jams, including a little Trey Songz. Don’t have much time to give a play-by-play, but here are some shots of the day. Go.

John, Jamie, and Ethan: You can feel the excitement!

The Roommates Herrera-Quam

Washed Out @ Mowhawk: by far the best show I saw yesterday. He was amazing live, and even better backed by the band Small Black

The Madison Bros take over Mowhawk’s

First Aid Kit: Their first US show. Success.

6th Street at night. Austin is Awesome

I also saw: White Denim, Dawes (duh), Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, jj, and some more. Details later.

SXSW 2010: We Made It!

After about 20 hours in the car and several 5 hour energies for John Ash later, the UW Fleet Vehicle (now known as The Chariot) has reached its destination at the Holiday Inn (Formerly the Radisson North) in Austin, TX.  We actually made such great time that we’re too early to check into our hotel, so I am updating you all from the hotel lobby as we wait for our room.

We drove past a really freakin’ big wind farm in Illinois, and I thought it was cool.

Ethan Berlin took the wheel for the majority of the trip, taking us all the way into (Bro)klahoma!

1 Box of 5 Hour Energy (The #Wudswsw sponsor) = 60 hours of good times

The Chariot.

John Ash introduced as all to Pickle – O’s at Sonic (fried pickle slices). We had a super friendly waitress to send us off to our final 2 hours into ATX. After a Gabe and Ethan, Weezer/Rubber Soul sing-along we finally arrived, and are ready to get downtown to our first day of music and shenanigans.

Gabriel Herrera doesn’t have anything to add to this post.

A happy Paddys day to all of you,

#wudsxsw

Album Releases – 3/16

Hey all. Since SXSW updates aren’t up here yet, I figured I’d give you something to look at in the meantime.

1. Neon Trees – Habits

The debut album from band Neon Trees, Habits, is finally here. Neon Trees is a band from Utah signed to Mercury Records who plays a style of dancy pop-rock that is incredibly listenable. They’ve received excellent buzz from magazines such as Spin, they’re playing SXSW, and they’re scheduled to tour with Mute Math. Take a look at their single, Animal:

2. The Whigs – In the Dark

The Whigs’ third album, In the Dark, came out today. The album was produced by Ben Allen, who is noted for working on the Animal Collective album Merriweather Post Pavilion. The album is said to possess many of the good elements of the 90′s grunge movement, and does heavy guitars in a polished, effective way. They’ve performed on Dave Letterman, and will be performing in Madison for a WUD Music show on Saturday, April 24th. Check this live video of them performing the title track “In the Dark,” with one of the best intros ever:

3. The Disco Biscuits – Planet Anthem

The Disco Biscuits released their album Planet Anthem today, the culmination of three years of work. While the album still bears the signature Bisco sound, it also broadens the group’s palette with hip-hop and indie rock influences and has intense hooks. An especially good song that rocks hard and will get you jumping is “You and I:”

Other notable album releases: The Superions, Gin Wigmore

So It Begins: WUD Goes to Austin

I feel like a proud parent, or that king elf from Lord of the Rings. But I am happy to say that the posse from WUD Music is off and running to Austin for SXSW 2010. There are 9 people from the committee going this year and the legend himself is creeping the streets of Austin, yup Trubes is there. There are sure to be some stories coming back from the trip.

The crew is just outside St. Louis as I write this and they have a long night of driving ahead of them. But soon enough the adventures start.

Check back here every day as they will be updating you on the good and the bad at SXSW this year. If you can’t hold your excitement back search #wudsxsw on Twitter for constant updates.

As for now I wish the posse in the UW Fleet Vehicle somewhere in the middle of the nation: godspeed. Back to my academic pursuits.
