what in the hell moment of the week

so it’s a little early in the week but i don’t think anything can top this.

this is a song about a meat sandwich in dutch. if you can’t handle the eurotrash awesome-ness for the whole three minutes and thirty seconds, just go to 3:10 to see how the dutch dance. i’ve actually witnessed this dance in person in a club.

oh wow

animal collective never ceases to amaze me with their music videos. now they have a “visual album” that premiered at sundance on the 26th. the film, titled oddsac, will also screen in chicago in march. so if anyone wants to trip without the drugs, start looking up the bus schedules down to chicago. the trailer is below.

pleasantly surprising

that’s how i would describe phoenix’s cover of bob dylan’s “sad-eyed lady of the lowlands”. phoenix is known for it’s catchy dance tunes like “1901″ which is featured in the cadillac commercials that everyone has seen a million times. i wasn’t sure how the acoustic cover would sound. i think i might actually prefer the phoenix version. maybe that’s just because it’s five minutes shorter. here are both for you listening pleasure.

“winter’s cold is too much to handle”

a band never spoke truer words. i feel the same now that we’ve hit the middle of january. it’s been a little warmer but you know that wisconsin winter will come back and bite us in the ass with a single-digit day.

but back to the music. those are some lyrics from vampire weekend’s song “horchata” from their second album contra. if you haven’t bought it yet, put that on your to-do list. i don’t buy many cds (i get them from my local library), but i bought this one and definitely don’t regret it.

i love the drums. would you call them carribean or african or does it not really matter? i guess it doesn’t matter since it’s just a really good song.

harold and maude

harold and maude is a fucking weird movie. i was forced to watch it at home because my mom loves any movie made before 1975 even if it sucks. the movie did have one redeeming quality however: the music. all of the music was by cat stevens. most of the music featured in the movie was from previously released albums like tea for the tillerman. but one song, “if you want to sing out, sing out”, was recorded specifically for the film. “if you want to sing out, sing out”, has been recently featured in a cell phone commercial that i’m sure you’ve all seen(i forget which one, they all seem the same). although cat stevens has since become yusuf islam and encountered some controversy because of it, his music is still the only reason i got through harold and maude. so here’s to cat/yusuf and his music.

hey there

hello friends. it’s been a while. but then again it seems like only yesterday i was starting to freak about finals. and now here we are only a few days away from a new semester. classes are depressing. so in honor of the 745 start times and TAs that can never quite understand your questions and power lectures and all the other things that suck about class, here is some really kickass blues music.

the nice thing about a new semester is that we’ll all be back in madison. and there will be more awesome shows in the rathskeller. thank god we have good music to get us through.

danger mouse can do no wrong

or at least not yet. danger mouse has a long list of accomplishments. danger mouse’s first project that gained the attention of the music industry, the grey album, just earned the #58 spot on rolling stone’s top 100 albums of the last decade. his collaboration with cee-lo green, also known as gnarls barkley, came out with two kick ass albums. st. elsewhere, the first of the two, was on the list of top 100 albums of the decade too (#87 to be exact). he also produced my favorite beck album modern guilt. danger mouse has definitely left his mark on music in the last decade.

but then again this is only my opinion. i’m sure there’s someone out there way more well-versed in music who will disagree with me.

anyways, pitchfork broke the news on september 29th that danger mouse would be collaborating with james mercer of the shins. the duo, named broken bells, will be releasing their album in 2010. today, ads have started appearing with urls that lead to websites displaying an image of what is supposedly mercer and danger mouse (shown below). the websites also have short instrumental segments of songs. i’m assuming these are previews of what’s to come on the album. you check these websites out here, here, and here.

and for those of you who would prefer an entire song instead of a several-second component, here are some videos of danger mouse’s work.

what in the hell moment(s) of the week

#1
it’s completely unrelated to music, but it would be really cool if madison could invest in some more salt for the sidewalks. i know we just had this huge record-breaking blizzard but still. between tuesday morning and thursday night i fell three times. maybe i just have horrible balance, but i don’t think it’s just me. in fact i know it isn’t. i saw a few other people wipe out. anyone else fallen on their ass a lot in the past few days?

#2
vevo. what is the point? it just launched december 6th at midnight. it’s pretty much the same thing as youtube. except it only has videos from universal. so if you’re looking for a song that doesn’t have an official video or isn’t distributed by universal, you have to go to youtube anyways. but it’s predicted to become the largest music oriented website on the internet. i’m just not seeing that happening. at least not for a while. did anyone even know it existed? the only reason i even heard about it was because the launch party came up as a main headline for yahoo. (yes yahoo considers a party with john mayer and justin timberlake more important than things in the national news like the economy and health care.) do you think it will end up being bigger than youtube? i guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

i’m missing a concert by one day

don’t you hate when that happens? i’m studying abroad next semester. the local natives are playing in the city i’m staying in a day before i get there. i can’t even get their album yet. it’s not being released here until february (it’s already been released in england). here’s a video of their most popular song on myspace.

they’re good. this is just my luck. i wonder how much it would be to switch my arrival date. it would probably be pretty expensive, but a concert seems like the perfect way to combat jet lag.
