Tape Deck Tuesday Playlist: Songs to Drive You Through the Week

AstonMartinMusic

Most students in Madison travel across campus completely on foot. For some, this lack of driving leads them to daydream about their car back home, and long for the rush of cruising down the open road.

But fear not, automotive enthusiasts. I have conjured a playlist that should satisfy your inner drive to, well, drive. Whether you are in need of some motivation while walking to class, looking for some new tunes to get you through your weekly readings, or you just want to reminisce of joyriding on those country roads back home, here’s a handful of songs that will hopefully steer your mood in the right direction.

“Kickstart My Heart” by Motley Crue – One of my favorite workout songs. The talkbox guitar solos leave you hard pressed to not pluck some air strings.

“Stoker’s Theme” by The Charlie Daniels Band

“Drive” by Incubus

“Ignition” by R. Kelly – Everyone knows the remix, but I wanted to give some love to the  original here. It’s just as funky.

“Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” by Primus

“Piece of Shit Car” by Adam Sandler

“Police Truck” by Dead Kennedys

“A Day at the Races” by Jurassic 5 featuring Big Daddy Kane and Percy P

“Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)” by Lady GaGa

“White Walls” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring ScHoolboy Q and Hollis - One of my favorites off of The Heist, the fast rapping in both “White Walls” and “A Day at the Races” are always quick to get my head bobbin’.

“Car Chase City” by Tenacious D

“Gold Trans Am” by Ke$ha

“Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman

“Fuel” by Metallica - Metallica is my favorite band, and this song is definitely one of their greatest from the 90s.

“Magic Bus” by The Who

“Red Barchetta” by Rush

“Aston Martin Music” by Rick Ross featuring Drake and Chrisette Michele

“A Real Hero” by College and Electric Youth - Alright, this one’s not strictly about driving, (literally or metaphorically) but it’s from the soundtrack for the film Drive starring Ryan Gosling. The entire soundtrack is top-notch, but this one was my particular favorite.

If none of these songs do it for you, you can always ghost ride the whip when you head home over spring break. Or at least check out some related videos on YouTube. Trust me. They’re worth it.

This Friday Night on the Terrace: Pat McCurdy

Do you like music? Do you have any semblance of a sense of humor? If you responded “yes” to both of the former questions, you CANNOT MISS Pat McCurdy, who is returning to the Terrace this Friday night to blow your minds on the Terrace.

Pat McCurdy is a household comedian/musician in the Midwest. Throughout the past 30 years, McCurdy has recorded over 13 albums and has played hundreds of shows. He often frequents UW Madison campus to play his infamous song “Sex and Beer,” of which you can feel free to download at the bottom of this post. Wisconsin State Journal praised McCurdy’s live show, saying his “fans get hooked on his presence, his lyrics, his banter with the audience, but also on each other.”

McCurdy does a phenomenal job of providing an interactive experience for his audience, often having fans come up on stage to join in on his politically incorrect banter. There is no topic that McCurdy won’t cover. From friends with benefits to lesbians to the Green Bay Packers, Pat McCurdy has a song for everyone.

If you’re in the mood for a Terrace show unlike any other, you do NOT want to miss Pat McCurdy this Thursday. Feel free to download “Sex and Beer” below and watch a little preview of Pat McCurdy’s tribute to the 80′s.

Just Announced: An Evening with Parks & Recreation’s Nick Offerman

It’s official: The man behind one of the most notorious mustaches of our generation will be visiting Madison. Nick Offerman, most famous for portraying Ron Swanson – the blunt, hyper-masculine Director of the Pawnee Department of Parks & Recreation on NBC’s Parks & Recreation – will take the stage at Memorial Union’s Union Theatre for “An Evening with Nick Offerman” on April 18th. The show includes what you might expect of the genius behind a character such as Ron Swanson: a Q & A, humorous anecdotes, acoustic songs (Will Duke Silver be making an appearance?!?!), tips for living a prosperous life (See the Ron Swanson Pyramid of Greatness), and much more.

Let’s talk about a few of the reasons Nick Offerman is every bit as cool in real life as the character he plays on Parks & Recreation: 1) Offerman is an expert woodworker and owner of Offerman Woodshop. He honed his skills as a theater set designer and now puts them to use creating such awesome things as canoes, some of which have been featured on Parks & Recreation. 2) Offerman is married to Megan Mullally, best known as Karen on Will & Grace. She has appeared as Tammy 2, the manipulative second wife (and second to be named Tammy) of Ron Swanson. 3) Offerman appears in the movie re-hash of 21 Jump Street, which opens this Friday and currently has a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 27 reviews from top critics. That’s pretty impressive.

A pre-sale for students of the university will occur on March 20th (a week from today) in which 250 tickets will be available for $10. Tickets for the pre-sale must be purchased at the Union box office or by telephone. The next day, March 21st, tickets will be on sale to the public for the price of $15 for students and $25 for non-students. After you buy your ticket, feel free to watch full episodes from this season of Parks & Recreation with it, streaming online until the season returns April 19th. Then show up ready to laugh on Wednesday, April 18th!

Watch to witness some of Offerman’s best work as Swanson:
