MODA Magazine Fashion Showcase: BBU and DJ DiOx

As magnificent MODA garments make their way down the runway, your feet will be itching to dance because of the beats DJ DiOx will be dropping at the fashion show this Friday at The Sett. And afterwards, to continue the night, the anticipated BBU will then give those feet the chance to actually dance with head-nodding, arm-dropping songs.

Originating from Chicago, members Epic, Illekt, Jason Perez, and DJ Esquire have begun to capture everyone’s attention with their hip-hop and “people’s movement” tracks. Songs like “Chi Don’t Dance” and “I Do This For My Culture” emphasize the importance of a community and a connected culture through lyrical messages. In 2009, “Chi Don’t Dance”was named by Pitchfork one of the “Best New Tracks.”

It is not hard to enjoy the songs created by these artists, in fact it’s quite easy. Quoted from Audible Treats Ltd., DJ Esquire says, “it’s all about spreading a positive energy,” to which Jason Perez adds “making a connection to the culture, to the movement.” Their inspirations come from artists such as M.I.A., Dead Prez, and Bad Brains. bell hooks, the band’s second mix-tape, was released in February 2012 and received a 7.8 from the tough Pitchfork critics. Not bad, BBU.

And although their main objective is to get their message across, making sure the crowd is doing what they do best – dancing it up – is also a huge concern. Be a part of that crowd and witness BBU’s talented and unique presence on stage this Friday in conclusion of the MODA Fashion show. It’s one you do not want to miss.

BBU & DJ Diox at MODA Runway Show

This Friday, join WUD Music and MODA Magazine for a night of fashion at UW Fashion Week’s finale event: the UW Runway Show in the Sett, cosponsored by WUD Music. The show begins at 8 PM but be sure to come early for upfront seating and red carpet photos with friends. Chicago’s BBU and UW Madison’s very own DJ Diox will be the show’s entertainment. DJ Diox will be performing the fashion show and BBU, describing themselves as a “loosely organized group of high-flying hooligans united under the common goal of world liberation,” will wrap up the evening with a high-energy DJ/rap combo. Check out a sample from BBU below. It’s sure to be a great time, and be sure to stick around for DTF after the show if you haven’t had enough fun for the evening!

This Friday: Doomtree w/ Milo at the Sett, 9 p.m.

TTBT.

It stands for “Team The Best Team,” a track off Doomtree’s second studio album, No Kings, and the band’s unofficial motto. It’s well-founded, as Twin Cities-based Doomtree’s dedication and talent has led them to become arguably the Midwest’s most successful rap collective. Individually, emcees Cecil Otter, Dessa, Mike Mictlan, P.O.S, and Sims, along with producers Lazerbeak and Paper Tiger, have all put out numerous successful albums. Together they form a supergroup of enormously talented minds, beats, and voices that has collaborated for more than a decade of innovative and unique hip-hop.

This has never been more evident that with No Kings, which further separates the group from cookie-cutter rap acts. Don’t get me wrong – you can still bump to it – but the usual subjects of top 40 rap songs are replaced with declarations of unity, evidence of their drive and limitless vision, and clever wordplay, hooks, and punk-tinged production. And as Midwesterners, you can find numerous references to your home-region that make you feel like one of the team (especially if you’re from “Minnesnowta”).

See “Team The Best Team” in action on Friday, March 9th in The Sett. Though you usually have to pay a pretty price to see the best teams in action, you can be in the crowd for this one without even taking out your wallet. That’s right, it’s free. On top of that, Wisconsin-via-Chicago rapper Milo will get us started at 9 p.m., whose quick, pop culture-dominated, beat poet-style rhymes will make you dizzy. Wait, there’s more! Stick around after the show for the DTF (Dance This Friday) Doomtree Afterparty, where producers Lazerbeak and Paper Tiger will spin the tracks.

Don’t miss your chance to see Midwest hip-hop’s best in action. Check out videos from Doomtree and Milo below, download Doomtree’s song “The Grand Experiment” and head to our Facebook to share our post with the link to this story to automatically be entered in a drawing for a signed Doomtree poster. The winner will be chosen and notified on Friday. Good luck, and see you at The Sett on Friday at 9!

DTF: Steez this Friday

Steez, by definition, means style with ease. Is there a better way to describe Madison’s very own self-defined Creepfunk band? I think not. Steez started up in 2003 and consists of five members: Matt Williams (keyboards/ synthesizers/ accordion), Steve Neary (guitar and vocals), Rob Bessert (drums), Chris Sell (bass), and Andrzej Benkowski (sax, oboe, and violion). Over the past few years, the band has gained national recognition, having performed at some of the finest music festivals in the country, such as Summer Camp, Summerfest, Electric Forest, and we can’t forget Mifflin last spring, where they played a most excellent cover of Madonna’s Like a Prayer (now that’s pretty steezy!). If you haven’t had a chance to hear them play yet, the quintet is a combination jam-dance-funk band (with a twang of something unearthly) that bleeds both personality and originality… So, they’re pretty much nothing short of mind-blowing.

Oh, and guess what? In an effort to spread their lovely music to the masses, the band is touring the Midwest this winter and spring in their exquisite bus “Big Brown” (you can’t miss it) and is offering free electronic copies of their albums released this year, including KRONOS- their first new album in three years- due in the spring.

So, come check them out in our DTF (Dance This Friday) series at midnight at Union South fo’ free, because opportunities like this are just too good to pass up!

Your Friday Night with YACHT, Asobi Seksu, and Asumaya

Tonight’s the night! Your Friday’s going to be filled with indie excellence. Seriously. The headlining tours of two powerhouses, Asobi Seksu and YACHT, will collide in Madison at The Sett tonight at 9 p.m., but the action gets started in mere hours and doesn’t end until the wee hours of the morning.

Around 5 pm Asobi Seksu will be in the studio on WSUM, 91.7 FM. So sit down with your bowl of ramen and click on this link when the time comes to get a preview of the blissful dream pop you can expect tonight when Asobi Seksu hits the stage. Or just start listening now since WSUM (celebrating it’s ten-year anniversary this year) has excellent programming all day.

At nine the party gets started with Madison’s own Asumaya. Asumaya is the highly-experimental solo project of CONTROL’s Luke Bassuener, who combines smooth vocal melodies with organically-shaped beats that makes you wonder how a man with only two arms and two legs can manage to recreate such a thing live. Get there early to find out the answer to that curiosity and listen to “Marketing is My Culture” to get an idea of what he sounds like.

A little before 10 p.m. Polyvinyl’s Asobi Seksu will take the stage, displaying why they’ve been at the forefront of the shoegaze and indie pop scene for nearly a decade. “Trails” (available for download below) off their latest, Hush, is a perfect example of the band’s style, attacking with sound from all sides, but above all displaying the beauty and power of Yuki Chikudate’s voice. Their skill is truly admirable and something you won’t want to miss in action.

Around 11 p.m., DFA artists YACHT will take control of your night and not give it back. No stranger to Madison (You may have caught them at 2009′s Foward Music Festival), they’ll be sure to get a sizable crowd moving. Their latest, Shangri-La, explored the dualisms of life – good vs. evil, utopia vs. dystopia, and more. It takes skill to create music that has meaning, and more to keep it danceable, but that’s the kind of band YACHT is. And the party doesn’t stop there – after YACHT has played their last song of the night, the DTF afterparty begins with members of the band spinning tracks. That’s right, you’re feet won’t stop moving until 2 a.m.

So clearly this isn’t one to miss. Get down to The Sett at 9 p.m. Check out some videos below from both Asobi Seksu and YACHT, and be sure to download Asobi Seksu’s “Trails.”

Saturday in the Sett – Los Campesinos! with Parenthetical Girls

With the release of LC!’s newest album in November, this long-awaited show is finally here! Pitchfork described Hello Sadness as “their fourth straight great album,” ultimately giving it a solid 8.0. Check it out for yourself below.

Although Parenthetical Girls haven’t released a full-length album in some time, they’re definitely not to be overlooked. If you haven’t heard of the Oregon-based group, their indie pop sound with an experimental edge is sure to win you over Saturday night. Follow this link to see for yourself: Careful Who You Dance With – Parenthetical Girls

Come to the Sett at 9 PM this Saturday for Los Campesinos! and Parenthetical Girls. Check out the Facebook event HERE. See you Saturday!

Just Announced: YACHT + Asobi Seksu

You may want to take a cue from the picture above and toss some confetti in the air because on February 17th the folks in attendance at The Sett will be treated to a fantastic double-feature when YACHT and Asobi Seksu play back-to-back. YACHT visits after putting out one of the hottest albums of 2011, Shangri-La, which delivered electropop that made us dance and ponder at the same time. Asobi Seksu’s appearance comes almost exactly a year after the release of Fluorescence, their newest album in a long career of shoegaze excellence. Don’t miss a chance to see two bands at the forefront of their craft, making your ears happy for the low, low price of free.

Best Buy & WUD Music Present: Neon Indian & Kreayshawn

FRIDAY, OCT. 28TH | UNION SOUTH | THE SETT | 8 PM

Ever since Pitchfork expressed their shock over Kreayshawn and Neon Indian‘s college tour dates together (which launched at the University of Iowa on Monday), we’ve been eagerly awaiting this show. Neon Indian was named in Pitchfork’s Best New Music and one of Rolling Stone’s hottest new bands of 2010. There’s certainly a lot of hype for this indie electronic group and Kreayshawn is sure to entertain as well. Since the Best New Artist nominee’s “Gucci Gucci” hit it big, there’s already been heaps of drama surrounding the California-born star. This indie rap/electronic duo will not disappoint, so don’t miss it!

Check out Neon Indian’s performance of “Polish Girl” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon below and if you haven’t seen the video for Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” yet, we highly suggest that you get out from under your rock and check it out. You won’t regret it!

We’re eager to see this show and happy to bring a piece of this great (however unexpected) tour to UW-Madison!

Tonight! DMF with Nick Nice

Remember last week’s DMF? If it’s a little hazy TRUST US, you had a good time and tonight’s DMF with Nick Nice is sure to be just as wild. After coming back home he’s had numerous successful businesses including his own record store and top rated radio show. Always throwin down the best for Madison, he’s been voted best DJ in the city many years in a row by various media sources.

DMF with French Horn Rebellion

Hey guys…Listen up!!  This Friday, October 14, French Horn Rebellion is coming to DMF at Union South.

DMF has been a Friday night staple here at Madison for years.  A rockin’ dance party, DMF has seen the likes of Matt & Kim, Girl Talk, Brother Ali, and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. Formally known as Club 770, DMF was a critical part of the social scene down at Union South.  Now finally finished with the renovations, DMF is settling in to it’s new home located in The Sett.  Bring your friends to be a part of the tradition that has kept Badgers dancing for years!

Welcoming back this awesome rave in style, we have French Horn Rebellion.  Keeping it in the family, FHR is a Brooklyn-based duo of brothers haling from our very own Milwaukee. They recently returned to their home state in May to open for a sold-out Yelle show at The Majestic.  The Wisconsin boys have a style that’s a groovy through-back to the 70′s with their own modern electric twist.  In their own words FHR came to be when, “After realizing that he didn’t want to play FRENCH HORN for life, Robert REBELLED with his brother David to create awesome dance music.”  Come check out the guys that The New York Times is calling “The next big thing…”  They are guaranteed to get you up on your feet and dancing!

11:55pm THIS FRIDAY NIGHT.  Union South.  BE THERE.
