Friday on the Terrace: BADBADNOTGOOD, KingHellBastard, and Monster House

BADBADNOTGOOD, along with KingHellBastard and Monster House, are invading the Terrace this Friday night. Canadian trio BADBADNOTGOOD formed in 2011 at Humber College in Toronto. Since then, they have released two albums (BBNG and BBNG2)  – which are both available for free on their website and bandcamp - and have done numerous collaborations, among them those with Tyler, The Creator and Frank Ocean of OFWGKTA. BADBADNOTGOOD puts an unlikely jazz twist on OFWGKTA’s otherwise rap and hip-hop tracks (be sure to check out “Seven,” where Tyler, The Creator has an awesome freak out near the end of the song you’ll surely appreciate).

Needless to say, BADBADNOTGOOD is bringing about both new and imaginative music; the crossing of jazz and hip-hop genres is definitely a musical path less traveled, and the trio seems to be making it work. They’re worth the listen, and if you come down to the Terrace around 9 on Friday, you’ll probably get to see Alex Sowinski, the band’s drummer, donning his super cute pig mask.

Also playing at the Terrace on Friday is KingHellBastard (KHB). Hailing from Milwaukee, KHB consists of DNA, Dana Coppafeel, Clark Beezy, DJ1L, Animas, Reakt Twenty, A-Biz and “all the other freaks in The Freak Kingdom” as the band wrote on their MySpace page. KHB has opened for artists such as Common, Q-Tip, and Souls of Mischief. Emanating a kind of unique hip-hop that’s energetic, raw, and sometimes unruly, this group will undoubtedly get the crowd going. Check out their video “Danger” for evidence.

As if that’s not enough hip-hop for you, Milwaukee collective Monster House will also be playing at the Terrace on Friday. Consisting of SPEAKEasy, Panic and Audiopilot, the group creates trippy and dynamic rap and hip-hop. They recently released an 11-track LP entitled Raiders of the Lost Art via Uni-Fi Records, whose bandcamp allows you to download the album for free. Monster House has even collab’d with KHB’s Dana Coppafeel.

It’s going to be a hip-hop kind of night at the Terrace on Friday. We look forward to seeing you there! In the meantime, download BADBADNOTGOOD’s “UWM (feat. Leland Whitty)”  below.

Tonight on the Terrace: Spliff Hemingway + Charlie Kim + Big Dylan

Just in case you haven’t noticed them yet, I’d like to point out that the Memorial Union Terrace has BLUE chairs out. Random side note, I know, but to accompany those fabulous lake-colored (if the lake was not a murky green) chairs this Saturday on The Terrace are rappers Spliff Hemingway, Charlie Kim, and Big Dylan, starting at 10 p.m.

Even though Big Dylan is at the young age of 19, his voice does not portray this in the least. His rapping style began in the party scene and has developed into a performance that still incorporates characteristics of a chill party. The song “Dodge N’ the Law” has a very relaxed beat in the background, which suits Big Dylan’s rapping style that resembles Snoop Dog. He also out his own Midwest-flavored lyrics over the Jay-Z and Kanye West song “Otis.” Check it out

Following Big Dylan is an acoustic rapper that likes to create music for the ladies. Charlie Kim’s recent album is named Songs for Women, and all tracks incorporate some aspect of a relationship. His chill voice that reminds me a tad bit of Mike Posner is perfect for his love songs, “Beautiful Girl” or “We Ain’t Gotta Do Much.” He is currently based in Madison and has been featured on the radio station 93.1 Jamz. Similar to Big Dylan, Charlie Kim also references the party atmosphere in the song “RedBull&Vodka,” which I’m sure is a combination of drink that you crazy Madisonites are familiar with.

Spliff Hemingway will then finish the night off continuing with that chill-party feel, but in a more simplistic manner. Songs such as “Buddha Heads” have a simple beat in the background, however lyrics are strung together throughout the song with his deep voice, which gives the song a rhythmic feel. Stephanie Jones from the LA Examiner is quoted saying that Spliff Hemingway is the “best of newfound, upcoming underground west coast hip hop.”

And there are your Saturday night plans made. I mean, first off, who doesn’t love a night on The Terrace? And second, who doesn’t like to listen to live music that’s fresh and awesome?

Tonight!: Surgeons in Heat LP Release w/ The Midwest Beat, The Fatty Acids, and Pioneer at Memorial Union

“Listen – I think you’ll be impressed.” If those words came from your slacker cousin, you may be able to dismiss them. But when they come from David Dye of NPR’s legendary music show World Cafe, those words carry a great amount of weight. You can hear him use them in reference to Milwaukee/Madison AM Gold quartet Surgeons in Heat if you listen to a December 2011 episode, and the bold statement has only gotten truer. This month, the band dropped their sophomore EP, Midnight At Bellevue, which calls on soulful hooks that infiltrate your brain through your eardrums and bury themselves there. It’s a peaceful takeover, and one you’ll surely welcome if you download it the EP for free at their bandcamp.

Bandcamp’s great, but fans of physical releases will rejoice, too, because this show celebrates the release of their Surgeons in Heat LP. On one side the vinyl contains their debut, the Surgeons in Heat EP, and you can find the new Midnight at Bellevue EP on the other. As a recent PopMatters review asserted, their emergence on the national scene has begun and it will only continue to intensify, so this will likely be something you’ll want to pick up to say you “knew them when.”

Joining them will be three other local acts Wisconsin is lucky to call their own. The Midwest Beat have been wowing Madison crowds for years now with their guitar-driven pop. They’re no stranger to the Terrace or to acclaim from local press, hopping their way onto Best of Madison lists practically every year. A.V. Club Madison raved about their most recent release, Gone Not Lost, saying the “tunes come neatly gift-wrapped with big hooks, back vocals that actually serve a purpose, and all the little details like bridges and pre-choruses that have somehow slipped through the cracks of modern pop.”

The Fatty Acids are no stranger to accolades themselves, having found themselves up against some act called Bon Iver (no, not Bonnie Bear) for Wisconsin’s band of the year at this year’s WAMI Awards. They’ve released two full-lengths, Stop Berries, Berries and Berries, Berries, and Leftover Monsterface (both available for free at their bandcamp). With names like that, you know they’re not dull. Their quirk pop sound is as big as their humor, with horns, howls, and drums beaten so mercilessly by Cole Quamme that you wonder how they’d survive a show. Their live show is known for its raucousness, as a dismembered R2D2 can attest to.

Pioneer will get us started at eight. Pioneer is made up of the three Madison-dwelling members of Surgeons in Heat along with Jacqueline Kursel. You would probably never know there was any relation between the two bands if you weren’t told; Kursel and Kenny Monroe trade off vocals in some stripped-down folk complemented with cello. It’s beautiful stuff, and Madison’s taken notice – it’s why when acts like Cate Le Bon and Breathe Owl Breathe come through town you can find Pioneer on the bill. Check out their bandcamp to listen to a few of their tunes.

If you don’t want to come down to Memorial Union at 8 p.m. after those descriptions, I don’t know what else I can do for you. Well, except tell you to download Surgeons in Heat’s “No One Left” below, watch their “The Price” video, and check out the links within the article, as they show just how talented these bands are. See you tonight.

The Dear Hunter with The Gazettiers

That’s right, The Dear Hunter is hitting up Madison this weekend. Hailing from Providence, TDH has surely made their mark on the progressive rock scene. After releasing their first EP in 2007, frontman Casey Crescenzo’s band was labeled as one of Alternative Press’ “100 Bands you Need to Know in 2007.” During the summer of 2011, The Dear Hunter released their 9-EP collective entitled “The Color Spectrum,” with each EP based on a different color. The band recently finished playing two shows at Coachella, and is scheduled to play at Bamboozle in May. Also playing the Sett on Saturday night will be The Gazettiers. This indie-acoustic band from Milwaukee consists of Shane English and Jared Guess. If Maps & Atlases, Conor Oberst, and the Fleet Foxes all threw some of their awesomeness into some broth, The Gazettiers would be the tasty concoction. Check out the video for “What It Means to be Alone” below and head out to the Sett Saturday night at 9 p.m. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoAtvzImzGY&feature=plcp

Tomorrow at the Sett: Blackbird Blackbird with Canopies and Kiazma, DTF with Nick Nice!

We have some brilliant electro-pop lined up for you this Friday at the Sett: San Francisco’s Blackbird Blackbird, Milwaukee’s Canopies, and Madison’s own Kiazma.

Since 2010, Blackbird Blackbird has released two full length albums, Summer Heart and Halo. Back in 2011, Blackbird Blackbird did a remix of Beach House’s hit “I Do Not Care For the Winter Sun,” blending its indie goodness with electronic-y hip-hop awesomeness. This past Monday, Blackbird Blackbird released his single “Waikiki”- available for download below. With electronic vibes and dreamy vocals, “Waikiki” is a relaxing but danceable fusion of sounds. Be sure to check out Blackbird Blackbird’s other recently released single, “New Leaf.”

The A.V. Club called Canopies’ self-titled debut EP “terrific, infectious electro-pop” and I couldn’t agree more. Released last year, the band’s five-track collection combines sophisticated electro with classic instrumentals (Download it for free at the band’s bandcamp). Canopies is loaded with personality and catchy choruses, not to mention its psychedelic groove nature makes it very danceable.

Kiazma, a local Madison spinna’ will be opening for Blackbird Blackbird and Canopies on Friday. If I do say so myself, his stuff is really cool. This past January he released a 4-track EP, Emergence, which is available for download on his bandcamp. Deep drum and bass pulls you in and takes you to a happy, synthesized place- definitely give “Weeping Wind” a listen. With the perfect blend of excitement and tranquility, Kiazma will leave you feeling good.

If you’re into artists like M83, Passion Pit, and Star Slinger or you’re just an all around electronic aficionado/ synth head, you’ll dig Blackbird Blackbird, Canopies, and Kiazma. Be sure to stick around after the show for DTF with Madison’s Nick Nice to partake in even more dreamy electro-beat loveliness.

Kimya Dawson with Adelyn Rose at the Sett, Friday

Kimya Dawson is “on the road again” and headed for the Sett this Friday along with Eau Claire’s very own Adelyn Rose. Grammy-winning and platinum-selling singer-songwriter Kimya Dawson rose to popularity with her work in the anti-folk band The Moldy Peaches. Dawson’s songs are also featured in Jason Reitman’s film Juno (the cute one with Ellen Page and Michael Cera). Her music served as the perfect backdrop to this romantic indie-dramedy.

In addition to all of this, Dawson has released six solo albums, one of which is for children, Alphabutt (hehe). Her latest, Thunder Thighs (also hehe), was released in October. She has done numerous collaborations with artists such as Third Eye Blind, Regina Spektor, and Aesop Rock. Dawson may look hardcore with her many tattoos and facial piercings, but the music she makes reveals her whimsical yet profound nature. Singing about “making music with [her] friends” and “motors homes with golden keys,” we see ease and even quirkiness in Dawson’s list-like lyrics. However, there is undoubtedly an underlying sincerity and truth to her words. Her performance promises to be just the same: honest and sincere, playful and heartfelt. That being said, this is definitely a show you won’t want to miss.

Playing alongside Kimya Dawson at the Sett this Friday is Eau Claire’s own Adelyn Rose. Adelyn Rose’s debut full-length Mezzanine was released independently earlier this month, showing signs of the band’s budding success. Tracks like “Willow Tree” and “Time Stands Still” reveal the uncorrupted ease of Adelyn Strei’s vocals. The band as a whole is nothing short of sophisticated melodic unity. With influences like Iron and Wine, Fleet Foxes, and Cat Stevens, Adelyn Rose’s music can best be described as indie-infused folk with dreamlike undertones. Already refined and charming, Adelyn Rose is sure to keep your ears lingering for more… So come out to the Sett this Friday and experience this up-and-coming Wisconsin band (and Kimya Dawson, of course!).

Check out the super-fun and colorful dance-themed video for Kimya Dawson’s “I Like Giants.”

Screaming Females + Cavemen + Giant People – Friday in Der Rath

Everybody scream for Screaming Females, Cavemen and Giant People this Friday in Der Rath! But seriously, there should be a large crowd gathered around this German-styled stage at 9 p.m., because it’s going to be pretty pulse-racing.

Starting off the night are Giant People. Their style can be described through the song, “The Steve Irwin,” which resembles a punk combination of The Rolling Stones and Jet. This Madison band has the right amount of garage-band style to get your Friday nightrolling. You can download their Giant EP for free at their Bandcamp.

But to change the vibe up a bit, Caveman will follow Giant People with their mysterious indie sound. Their recent album, Coco Beware, contains songs such as “Easy Waters” and “My Time” that sooth your senses with the combination of lyrics and acoustic instruments. According to an article from The New York Times, this album can be described as “cool-headed” but “straightforward.” The mesmerizing tunes are what is needed prepare yourself for the next band to take the stage –Screaming Females.

Screaming Females will end the night with a bang–only one female in the group though. Articles such as the SXSW review of 2011 found on Pitchfork emphasize that the lead singer, Marisa Paternoster, is a tiny woman with an exceptionally, powerful voice. Their album, Castle Talk, was given a 7.9 on Pitchfork and was quoted as “the band’s tight, tense dynamic.” Prominent sounds of the electric guitar, bass, drums and Paternoster’s voice really make this the rock album what it is, along with their live performance.

Download songs from Screaming Females and Cavemen below. So come and experience this band live and the fantastic lineup for the night starting at 9 p.m.

Rosie Thomas with Bhi Bhiman

Rosie Thomas and her band recently kicked off their first tour in over four years. They’ll be stopping off in Madison this Saturday and will no doubt give us the highly anticipated musical performance we’re all hoping for (and more!). Thomas has been releasing albums since 2001 under various labels such as Sub Pop Records (The Shins, Dum Dum Girls) and her very own Sing-A-Long Records. Thomas’s most recent album With Love was released this past Valentine’s Day—the perfect day for falling in love with… With Love! New York Times said, “Her new songs frame love as an action as well as a condition, sometimes ruefully and sometimes, as on ‘Over the Moon,’ radiantly.” Beyond her new album and the tour, Thomas recently collaborated with singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens to produce a new split single scheduled for release on Record Store Day April 21. Thomas said on her website that her show will have it all: songs new and old, full and stripped down, encouragement, storytelling, and some lovely comedy by her quirky alter ego- pizza delivery gal Sheila Saputo (Seriously, look at pictures of her. It will make your day).

Bhi Bhiman will be opening for Thomas this portion of the tour while Ivan & Alyosha will take over in late April. Bhiman is a first-generation American of Sri Lankan ancestry from the Bay Area. He has gained extensive recognition with the release of his sophomore album Bhiman under Boocoo Music. Bhiman features seemingly timeless and enthralling vocals along with skillful acoustics reminiscent of sixties folk. Needless to say, he’ll be sure to captivate the crowd this Saturday. So come chill at the Sett for an evening of splendid entertainment.

Tonight! The Winter Sounds, with Animals in Human Attire and TL;DR at Der Rathskeller

This Friday night at Der Rath at 9:00 p.m., join us for one of the last great rock shows in Der Rath before our Terrace season starts up!

Hailing from Athens, GA, The Winter Sounds was formed by Patrick Keenan in 2006. Shortly thereafter, the post-punk assemblage signed with Live Wire Records out of Atlanta, which was followed by a full U.S. Tour in 2008. Their second full-length album, Church of the Haunted South, was included on Atlanta A-List Magazine’s Top 10 Albums of 2009. Today, the band is working out of Nashville, and producing new material with Scott Solter, who has previously worked with St. Vincent, Spoon, and Okkervil River. Sean Moeller of Daytrotter describes the Winter Sounds as “the very definition of what the British blokes cream themselves over. Yet, there’s this very subtle American emotionalism to it that savors–oddly enough– the fragility of a thousand compressed feelings.”

A Milwaukee favorite, Animals in Human Attire started when frontman and UW-Madison student Jack Tell needed a creative outlet for his solo material. Animals in Human Attire has recently returned from a Midwest tour in support of their most recent, self-titled EP.  If Modest Mouse got together with a folksy yodeler, Animals in Human Attire would surely be the lovechild.

Madison locals TL;DR will also be playing. With a 60′s garage-rock sound mixed in with a surfer-chill quality, TL;DR was one of the top four contestants in the Isthmus Band-To-Band Competition last year.

This Friday night at Der Rath will be one of the more eclectic show’s you’ll go to this year, and everyone needs a little indie-folk-rock-post-punk-surfer-garage-music in their lives.  We hope to see you there.

MODA Magazine Fashion Showcase: BBU and DJ DiOx

As magnificent MODA garments make their way down the runway, your feet will be itching to dance because of the beats DJ DiOx will be dropping at the fashion show this Friday at The Sett. And afterwards, to continue the night, the anticipated BBU will then give those feet the chance to actually dance with head-nodding, arm-dropping songs.

Originating from Chicago, members Epic, Illekt, Jason Perez, and DJ Esquire have begun to capture everyone’s attention with their hip-hop and “people’s movement” tracks. Songs like “Chi Don’t Dance” and “I Do This For My Culture” emphasize the importance of a community and a connected culture through lyrical messages. In 2009, “Chi Don’t Dance”was named by Pitchfork one of the “Best New Tracks.”

It is not hard to enjoy the songs created by these artists, in fact it’s quite easy. Quoted from Audible Treats Ltd., DJ Esquire says, “it’s all about spreading a positive energy,” to which Jason Perez adds “making a connection to the culture, to the movement.” Their inspirations come from artists such as M.I.A., Dead Prez, and Bad Brains. bell hooks, the band’s second mix-tape, was released in February 2012 and received a 7.8 from the tough Pitchfork critics. Not bad, BBU.

And although their main objective is to get their message across, making sure the crowd is doing what they do best – dancing it up – is also a huge concern. Be a part of that crowd and witness BBU’s talented and unique presence on stage this Friday in conclusion of the MODA Fashion show. It’s one you do not want to miss.
