This Saturday in the Sett: F. Stokes w/ DJ Radish and Briar Rabbit

It’s probably easy to forget where you come from when you move to New York City, but F. Stokes ain’t having it. There’s no greater evidence of that than “My Simple,” the lead single and video from his upcoming release, Love, Always, out March 6th. The song declares, “This is not New York and this is not L.A. – this is my small town in the U.S.A.” He says it with pride, not afraid to make distinction from his current home base. The video also bleeds Sconnie pride, showing off some of the places that make the Madison area great, from the Majestic to Strictly Discs to Mermaid Coffee to a cornfield.

So it’s fitting and admirable that F. Stokes will play a free concert on Saturday, recognizing the fans that supported him on the journey to where he is today. He tweeted last night, “This Saturday. Union South. Me & Radish. Free show. Madison, I’m so excited to finish my tour off in my hometown.” We’re so excited to be hosting an event that celebrates one of our own.

It’s probably safe to say that DJ Radish and Briar Rabbit are excited to be a part of it all as well, and you should look forward to seeing them. Getting us started will be Briar Rabbit, whose self-coined “thought pop” features some excellent grooves and deep subject-matter. The most recent example is his Black History Month-inspired ‘The Great Routine,’ where each Thursday of February he releases a free song on his site following the storyline of an African-American blackface minstrel. It’s both powerful and catchy. Following Briar Rabbit, DJ Radish will give you some serious homegrown beats to get your body jumping. You may have caught Radish playing all over Madison, including the Majestic and Segredo.

So get down to The Sett at 9 p.m. on Saturday to be a part of this homecoming. We may not be New York, and we may not be L.A., but we’ll definitely be doing some big city-caliber partying this weekend.

Get Your Juke On at Chrissy Murderbot + DJ Diamond Tomorrow at the Sett

As A.V. Club Madison said in their blurb on tomorrow’s show, “Chrissy Murderbot is about to be kind of a big deal.” Murderbot’s latest, Women’s Studies, is especially connectable with our demographic, as his love for things like Nintendo and All That, which triggers our nostalgia-senses, shines through in his art and presentation. DJ Diamond is no slouch either, and fires on many of the same cylinders as Murderbot with speedy, infectious beats. Oh, yeah, and Diamond’s Flight Musik was Tiny Mix Tapes’ fifth-best album of 2011. No big deal, right? His beats are so in demand, in fact, that rumor has it some of the best practitioners of the Chicago-originating dance of “juke” will reportedly make their way up I-90 West tomorrow just to move their feet at lightning fast speeds to his and Murderbot’s spinning.

So get ready for a full night of dancing to infectious beats, as DJ Diamond hits the stage at 10 pm and Chrissy Murderbot takes over at midnight. Check out some tracks below, and we’ll see you tomorrow.

Your Saturday Night with Deleted Scenes and A Lull

Image

Three words: Innovative. Exciting. Fresh. If you grace us with your presence at the Sett this Saturday night, you will get to experience these three words in motion. Deleted Scenes, a band hailing from Washington, DC, will blow your mind with their fusion of pop and electronic sound, while throwing in rhythms from surf rock to R&B. Chicago’s A Lull takes experimental music to a whole new level while concurrently providing beautiful vocal melodies. Who WOULDN’T want to have this experience? Moral of the story: You will not be let down by these two phenomenal talents. 9:00 pm. The Sett. Union South. See you there.

Saturday in the Sett – Los Campesinos! with Parenthetical Girls

With the release of LC!’s newest album in November, this long-awaited show is finally here! Pitchfork described Hello Sadness as “their fourth straight great album,” ultimately giving it a solid 8.0. Check it out for yourself below.

Although Parenthetical Girls haven’t released a full-length album in some time, they’re definitely not to be overlooked. If you haven’t heard of the Oregon-based group, their indie pop sound with an experimental edge is sure to win you over Saturday night. This Friday: IfIHadAHiFi and NORTHLESS at the Sett

Milwaukee comes to Madison as two Brew City bands, IfIHadAHiFi and NORTHLESS, will hit The Sett stage on Friday for a free show.

Chances are, if you’re a native of Wisconsin and a fan of music, you’ve heard of IfIHadAHiFi. The noise-rocking palidromophiles, sporting names like Dr. Awkward (drummer) and Mr. Alarm (bass/synth), are known as much for their raucous and unpredictable shows as for their swirling instrumentation and catchy choruses. In A.V. Club Milwaukee’s tribute to the band for their tenth anniversary, Kieth Brammer, former bassist of Wisconsin Area Music Industry Hall of Fame band Die Kruezen, accurately described the mayhem of IfIHadAHiFi’s set, saying, “it was the absolute insanity of their show that initially fixated me: Their total disregard for their instruments, personal safety, and the safety of anyone foolish enough to be close to the stage was riveting.”

IfIHadAHiFi was supposed to have released their fifth album by now, entitled Nada Surf EP +3, reciprocating in jest to a move Nada Surf made by calling their 2010 cover album If I Had A Hi-Fi. But that album hasn’t been released yet. Why? In a story that could only involve IfIHadAHiFi, they had to re-record a song and re-press the albums to avoid being sued by WWE over a copyright claim for use of a soundbyte of a bounty being placed on wrestler Ric Flair’s head. As if you don’t have enough evidence of their humor and uniqueness yet, check out the artwork for Nada Surf EP +3:

No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you- that is, indeed, a cat in a sailor cap on a surfboard.

This Saturday: Star Persons at The Sett

We should really only have to say one thing to get you to The Sett on on Saturday night at 9 p.m.: Alien life-forms will be in the building.

That’s right. Sure, Madison claims Star Persons - the electronic hip-hop group with catchy hooks and rhymes so fast they can’t be from this planet – as natives, but their blog and messages reveal the truth:

“We came to this planet to make you dance. Your planet is full of life and drenched in exotic energy. We are visitors in your mortal realm. We shall serve our purpose and then we will fade.”

Their work is evidence that Star Persons are achieving their intergalactic and multidimensional goal. In their time on this planet, they seem to have learned from artists like Outkast, N.E.R.D., and Jamiroquai, creating something you can’t help but move your feet around to like gravity is no obstacle. Earthlings have taken notice. At this year’s Madison Area Music Awards, Star Persons took home (wherever that is) Best New Artist, Best Hip-Hop Album, Best Hip-Hop Song, and Best Hip-Hop Performer awards.

We’re glad they haven’t faded yet, as they released their second full-length LP, Esc Artists, in August. In fact, the sextet show no signs of slowing up, playing sold out shows, sharing the stage with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and recording non-stop, all in a little less than a year-and-a-half of existence (on this planet, at least). See them at work on Saturday at The Sett as they take on a special UW-Madison centered mission, codenamed “Fear of the Red Planets.” It’s free to attend, and you might even convince band member Deken Frost to use his supernatural smelling powers to tell you a little something about what your odor gives away about you.

Check out the Facebook event, and give a listen to (and download for free) their Madison Area Music Award-winning song, “Supernova”, below.

This Weekend in Der Rath

Friday 4/22: Higher Education Records Showcase @ 9 PM

Come out to Der Rathskeller tonight and check out some local rap at the Higher Education Records Showcase. Expect Phonetic ONE, Sleepy, G DeLo, Bonnie and Korim to show up. DJ Illy Holiday will be DJing the event as well. Should be a great time, come get your freak on!

Here’s some video of Phonetic One performing at Mifflin Street Block Party last year:

Saturday 4/23: The Selfish Gene with Christopher Porterfield @ 9 PM

For Saturday night we have Madison band The Selfish Gene  in Der Rath. This great group of alt-rockers have been around Madison for a while now, they won the Isthmus’ Band to Band Competition back in 2009. Here’s a little taste:

Opening up for them will be Christopher Porterfield, of Milwaukee’s great Conrad Plymouth. He’s sure to start things off on a softer, more peaceful note. Why not have a peaceful Saturday in Der Rath before next Saturday’s madness that is Mifflin?
