giddyup

We’re pumped.  Their studio was built from an old chicken coop but there’s no cooping up these boys.  They’ll join us in Madtown after playing the likes of Coachella and several other venues across the country, and bring with them sounds reminiscent of the Catskill Mountains and backyard BBQs.  Those whom have had the pleasure of hearing them live say concert-goers cannot help but leave the show converted.  Come and embrace the conversion.

Tickets go on sale Friday March 11th at 11am!!! $15 ($12 for UW students with ID)

Available at the Memorial Union Box Office, Vilas Box Offce, by phone at 608-265-ARTS, and online at TrueEndeavors.com << don’t wait too long to get yours!

Lubriphonic + The Hue Tomorrow night!

Lubriphonic at the Telluride "Blues and Brews" Festival

Tomorrow night, that is Friday December 10th, we will have Lubriphonic and The Hue playing in our very own Der Rathskellar! You gotta come out to see this – it’s gonna be a funky dance party followed by some rawk. Lubriphonic has played with such greats as  Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Derek Trucks Band, and Beyonce to name a few. They have been touring in support of their most recent album, The Gig is On – which received several nominations at the 2009 Chicago Music Awards.

Check out this video from Lubriphonic’s show in Boulder this past August:

The Chicken is Worth More Alive than Dead

Good times* will be had by all

(*featuring a three-piece horn section)

The Hue: melting faces since 2007

Then after Lubriphonic’s set, stick around for The Hue! These guys are experienced rockers, whose instrumental progressive jams cite influences such as Frank Zappa and King Crimson. The Hue has played with the likes of Umphrey’s McGee, The New Deal, and more recently they have collaborated with Garaj Mahal. They released their first full length LP, Beyond Words in 2009 – check out the song Igneous Pillow off of the album at their website (but beware, your face may melt)

Hope to see you there!

Horse Feathers recap

Our friend and official videographer Spencer Wells got some great footage of Horse Feathers on Saturday night.

It was a full house and a great show. Check it:

The song “Helen” is from their second album, House with No Home. If you were there, you’ll appreciate reliving the moment – if you weren’t there, you’ll feel like you were.

If a band plays in der Rath and no one is there to hear them, do they make a sound?

This of course would never happen given the immense coolness of all the bands we book, so we’ll leave the pondering of that question for a different venue.

Luckily for you readers of this week’s WEEKEND ANNOUNCEMENTS, and thanks to my English professor David Zimmerman, I’m waxing poetic today. Please feel free to give me snaps after reading.

since it is too much to rhyme, both shows begin at 9:30pm and will be in der Rathskeller

FRIDAY: Grandchildren with Dinosaur Feathers and Temple (formerly known as Arto)

Grandchildren= chillwave

Though their name descends from old, their music is new

The songs start out with drums but there’s more to come it’s true.

Layer upon layer, a constant buildup

Both sides of the Atlantic is where the lead man grew up.

This music puts you in a state of flux

and Dinosaur Feathers and Temple also don’t suck.

Come experience the experience. –>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCy_olM8XeA

SATURDAY: Ari Herstand with Daniel and the Lion

Smooth and cool like water in a pool

Ari Herstand

Ari Herstand’s voice glides over you.

Swishing and swaying is what you’ll be doing

Boys bring your girls and they’ll surely be swooning.

On One Tree Hill is where his music has played

And if you leave early you’ll wish you’d have stayed.

Plus he’s from Minneapolis, so help support the midwest! –> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TcViT1G_p0

Enjoy,

Jaime

World Music Fest Weekend!!!

This Friday night WUD music is making a change of scenery as El Ten Eleven rocks out at The Majestic with Dosh and Baths. “Their third record, These Promises Are Being Videotaped, is packed full of danceable melodies that put Ratatat to shame.” Spin.com.  Trumping Ratatat? now that’s some talent.  Hailing from L.A. and bringing with them the technologic sounds of dance-y rock, these guys know their way around their instruments and loop petals.  This concert is sure to be a spectacle worth watching.

And their drummer even plays guitar… while drumming?? Say whaa’?

Plus, the bumping electronic and jam-bandy quality of Baths and Dosh, respectively, provide opening acts that complement El Ten Eleven like chocolate on peanut butter.

BUT THE FUN DOESN’T STOP.

World Music Fest continues as Those Darlins rock the High Noon Salon with Turbo Fruits, These United States, and Deep Dark Woods on Saturday.  The powerful, female voices of Those Darlins are kicking up dust and taking names as they bring forth their edgy, folk/rock sounds… all in their leather cowgirl boots.

Check these chicks out.

Now go on folks, get cultured.

Enjoy,

Jaime

Truth & Salvage Co. Return!!

Were you too busy with finals to come out for Truth & Salvage Co.’s May show in der Rath? Too bad! But don’t worry too much because they will be making a triumphant return in less than a month!

Truth & Salvage Co.

Thursday, October 7

9:30 pm

with Pioneer

Download their Daytrotter Session to listen to while you read – it is one of my very favorite Daytrotter sessions ever.

Since their last appearance at the Union, Truth & Salvage Co. have released an album, played Bonnaroo and the rest of the festival circuit, and generally been awesome. Their fresh take on Americana rock, with four (FOUR!) vocalists and songwriters within the sextet, has rejuvenated a road-weary genre.

I don’t know how much more I can say about how imperative it is for you to stop out at their show without starting to wax poetic, but be sure to check out that Daytrotter session as well as listen to their live NPR set!

Openers Pioneer are quickly becoming a staple in the Madison indie circuit. Fronted by Kenny Monroe, Pioneer is unique with their innovative use of folk-cello. Is that a thing? If it isn’t, that’s okay because whatever Pioneer is doing with that cello is working for me. It will probably work for you, too.

Big Terrace Weekend! Come out!

This weekend we have some seriously awesome shows coming at you.  Don’t miss these two days of great music!

this weekend at the union

Jarrod Gorbel (of The Honorary Title) + Cedarwell + The Gazetteers

Friday, April 30

9 pm @ der Rathskeller/ Memorial Union

With The Honorary Title, JARROD GORBEL stole the hearts of many a teen girl with his artful songwriting. Though The Honorary Title has run its course, Jarrod is back on the road, performing new and old songs.

Jarrod lives in New York City and is on his first solo tour to promote his debut E.P, Ten Years Older, in anticipation for the release of his full-length solo album Devil’s Made a New Friend. He will be traveling around the nation. Gorbel’s deceptively simple melodies, warm arrangements and soulful, soaring voice were always what drove the Honorary Title and now his new solo material brings those qualities into crisp focus. Rolling Stone once said of him, “Gorbel still has his strikingly gorgeous voice which will probably always be the secret to slaying the sound-alikes.”

CEDARWELL is an acoustic indie act from Sheboygan, WI. Led by master songwriter Erik Neave, they are fresh off the heels of a European tour and a new album release. Highly recommended listening for fans of Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Daredevil Christopher Wright, etc.

THE GAZETTEERS are Shane English and Jared Guess from Milwaukee. Citing Elliott Smith, Nirvana, and Nick Drake as influences, they stand head and shoulders above the generic masses of dudes with guitars. Come out early, don’t miss these guys!
