LitFest Concert: Owen Pallett w/ Land of Vandals

Don’t forget, Owen Pallett will be performing in the Sett at the new Union South this Saturday, April 16th at 9:00 PM. This is a concert that we are very excited about! Remember that the concert is free and open to the public (18+). Take this opportunity to see a wonderful free show in the new music venue at Union South, the Sett.

Land of Vandals, a local Madison band, will be starting the show off for us. They were fantastic when they opened up for My Brightest Diamond in der Rath, so get here early!

Our friends at the WUD Publications Committee kicked off LitFest today. Besides this concert there is a great deal more to get excited about! LitFest celebrates and promotes literacy and writing in all of it’s forms.  They will be having a variety of events going on through April 19th. Check out the LitFest website for more info.

Horse Feathers recap

Our friend and official videographer Spencer Wells got some great footage of Horse Feathers on Saturday night.

It was a full house and a great show. Check it:

The song “Helen” is from their second album, House with No Home. If you were there, you’ll appreciate reliving the moment – if you weren’t there, you’ll feel like you were.

Digging in the Crates

Just found this old gem in the ‘crates’ of my iTunes today from one of the more interesting hip-hop groups to emerge out of the early 2000s – Handsome Boy Modeling School

First off – great name. It’s creative. It’s classy. And it made fun of all other rappers during this time. Unfortunately they haven’t done much since 5 years ago. They should though.

Second – it made me rediscover how much better Ocean’s Eleven is than the rest of the Ocean’s movies (unless you are in a European mood then Twelve hits the spot). Yes if you recognize the song that is where it’s from. The scene with Rusty – who eats in next to every scene through out the series – is sitting at the bar with ‘dancers’ behind glass.

If that doesn’t sell it then maybe this will. Quite possibly the greatest title for any hip-hop album ever:

Cheers and keep it classy.

Spotlight on… Matt Forrest

So the blog team has decided to reinstate the weekly feature of member spotlights highlighting the current favorites of WUD Music’s finest. And who better to start off with than WUD Music director Matt Forrest? Right, we thought so too.

Name: Matt Forrest

Major(s): Geography (Human and Cartographic Design) and Sociology

What is your current musical philosophy?

I used to listen to a lot of underground rap – and still do – but the genre has become a little stale. There are a lot of people out there doing great things in the genre but I look to music that is pushing the limits – which is why I have started to move into more electronic based music and hip-hop where the limits of what has been done before are being pushed.

In terms of hip-hop for me that is exemplified by P.O.S. who constantly releases albums that challenge the listener and bring something that we haven’t heard before. On the other end I enjoy a lot of what the Mad Decent label has put out as well – exploring genres that have not been given the exposure they really deserve, but genres that are on the cutting edge and creating/re-envisioning music as we know it.

What are you currently listening to?

Congorock
Brick Bandits
The Very Best
Daniel Haaksman
Shine Blockas – Big Boi w/ Gucci Mane
Passion Pit

Favorite live show:

Matt + Kim

I’ve seen them a lot and always enjoyed it. If I had been at Dave Chappelle’s Block Party I’m sure that would take it.

Favorite music news source (blog/magazine/etc):

Google Reader is my source. I keep all my blogs there. Off of those though I would say:

Hot Biscuits
Sound Verité
Gotta Dance Dirty
Fakeshore Drive

Favorite music committee memory:

Ha. There are plenty. SXSW (SlamBurger), Girl Talk in 770 (RIP), Homegrown Hip Hop Fest…

But for tops I think I’ll stick with Diplo. The show and the after party. Too good too good.

Top 5 most played songs on iTunes:

The top is MPR News Radio but that really doesn’t count so:
Prom Quiz – Grayskul
Pon De Floor – Major Lazer
Stand Up (Let’s Get Murdered) – P.O.S.

Two truths and a lie:

I can tell you the episode and season number of ‘The Office’ with in two episodes
I use bro-tein aka protein shakes
My mom might swear more than me (love you Mo)

Moment of Zen:

oh wow

animal collective never ceases to amaze me with their music videos. now they have a “visual album” that premiered at sundance on the 26th. the film, titled oddsac, will also screen in chicago in march. so if anyone wants to trip without the drugs, start looking up the bus schedules down to chicago. the trailer is below.

pleasantly surprising

that’s how i would describe phoenix’s cover of bob dylan’s “sad-eyed lady of the lowlands”. phoenix is known for it’s catchy dance tunes like “1901″ which is featured in the cadillac commercials that everyone has seen a million times. i wasn’t sure how the acoustic cover would sound. i think i might actually prefer the phoenix version. maybe that’s just because it’s five minutes shorter. here are both for you listening pleasure.

hey there

hello friends. it’s been a while. but then again it seems like only yesterday i was starting to freak about finals. and now here we are only a few days away from a new semester. classes are depressing. so in honor of the 745 start times and TAs that can never quite understand your questions and power lectures and all the other things that suck about class, here is some really kickass blues music.

the nice thing about a new semester is that we’ll all be back in madison. and there will be more awesome shows in the rathskeller. thank god we have good music to get us through.

rock on folks,
