why WUD Music is amazing: 2011 Lollapalooza Lineup

Ever look at the WUD music schedule only to think, “gee, I don’t know ANY of those bands!”? Well, it’s happened to this blogger as well, so fear not, but keep in mind you may want to get to know them if you want to be ahead of your peers when it comes to the latest awesome music.

How can I make such a boastful statement? Let’s cross-compare WUD’s most recent booking year with the August 2011 Lollapalooza lineup:

Mayer Hawthorne & the County, Gold Motel, Haley Bonar, Midnight Conspiracy, Maps & Atlases, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. all played here in the fall and all will participate in this Chicago music festival this August 5-7 in Grant Park.

yeah, baby.

Not to mention The Felice Brothers, who recently graced the new Sett, have a feature article in the latest issue of Spin magazine.

Not too shabby, eh? Keep on attending our shows and we’ll keep giving you the best acts the music scene has to offer (usually for free)!

The Love Language with Meridene: This Weekend at der Rathskeller

February 12 (this very Saturday!) come and see THE LOVE LANGUAGE play in der Rathskeller at 9:30 with openers MERIDENE.

THE LOVE LANGUAGE is comprised for lyrics and music plucked from the mind of Stuart McLamb, a North Carolina native. The music of The Love Language has a guitar-laden sound that is accented by adorable ‘60s backup singers. Though I would hesitate to liken him and his band too strongly to any certain artist, they bear a resemblance to the band Fanfarlo or early Phoenix. In April of this year, they will be playing at Coachella so it is highly suggested that you grab your chance to see them free while you can. Check out this very well-edited (by their label, Merge Records) video of one of their live performances:

Meridene is a band from our very own… Wisconsin! Meridene is a blossoming alternative band with all the regular staples of a four-piece band, blended neatly into catchy arrangements. They received this rave from the Onion AV Club: “the smart pop and joyous hooks…ensure that Meridene will hold people’s attention all on its own now that it has a foot in the door.”

Saturday at Der Rath: Owen and Blessed Feathers

Saturday, January 29th, 9:30 PM at Der Rathskeller: Owen, solo project of Mike Kinsella, and Blessed Feathers.

Mike Kinsella, best known for his band American Football, has been in the Chicago indie scene since he was twelve when he joined his older brother, Tim Kinsella, in the band Cap’n Jazz. His sound is commonly described as a complex work of acoustic guitar and lyrics occasionally featuring piano or drums. He has worked with producers Brian Deck (Iron & Wine) and Tim Iseler (Wilco) while perfecting his sound for his latest album, New Leaves, which is said to feature “a more complex song structure and refined lyrical matter.” Come see the peaceful and relaxing sound of Owen which Pitchfork calls “the new drug for the treatment of chronic insomnia.”

stressed out?

me too. so last night i decided to watch into the wild again to get my mind off of genetics. i should not have done that. watching that movie makes me want to drop out, burn my social security card, and move to alaska. i would too except for the fact that i would pobably only make it as far west as iowa before something terrible happened to me.

into the wild is not only inspiring to the hitchhiker in all of us. it also has some kickass music. the whole soundtrack is by eddie vedder. it’s probably one of my top three favorite soundtracks (along with dazed and confused and o brother where art thou?). below are videos of my two favorites from the soundtack, “guaranteed” and “hard sun”.

how many weeks until thanksgiving break? i need it bad.

hopefully you’ve recovered from your hang over. if not, grab your aspirin and check out this video of jose gonzalez. it’s a few years old, but jose is always good to listen to when your liver hates you and your whole body hurts. he’s also good when you don’t feel like complete crap.

wet cold nasty wisconsin weather…

calls for some great acoustic music doesn’t it? tomorrow night it’s supposed to rain/snow just in time for the great lake swimmers to play at the rathskeller. if you’re a fan of iron and wine, jose gonzalez, or horse feathers you should bundle up and head to the union. the show starts at 9:30 and it’s fo’ free (unforgivable #1 anybody?). here’s a video of “still”, a song off of their most recent album lost channels.

i’ve decided to redeem myself after yesterday’s video post. here are some nuggets from my favorite youtube channel la blogotheqe. these songs are great for studying music: musically good but not distracting. an added bonus- these songs are all great hipster material. granted, these videos are all from last year, but if you like these, you’ll be in skinny jeans and a plaid flannel shirt in no time.
