We’ve been pumped for Star Slinger, Shlohmo, and Shigeto for awhile now and in preparation for the party that is about to ensue, we bring you a short but sweet interview with Star Slinger himself.
Ever since Pitchfork expressed their shock over Kreayshawn and Neon Indian‘s college tour dates together (which launched at the University of Iowa on Monday), we’ve been eagerly awaiting this show. Neon Indian was named in Pitchfork’s Best New Music and one of Rolling Stone’s hottest new bands of 2010. There’s certainly a lot of hype for this indie electronic group and Kreayshawn is sure to entertain as well. Since the Best New Artist nominee’s “Gucci Gucci” hit it big, there’s already been heaps of drama surrounding the California-born star. This indie rap/electronic duo will not disappoint, so don’t miss it!
Check out Neon Indian’s performance of “Polish Girl” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon below and if you haven’t seen the video for Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” yet, we highly suggest that you get out from under your rock and check it out. You won’t regret it!
We’re eager to see this show and happy to bring a piece of this great (however unexpected) tour to UW-Madison!

Can’t get enough of Star Slinger? Ya we can’t either obviously. The remix is You Can by Body Language, the Brooklyn based band, and is done in classic Star Slinger fashion.
February 12 (this very Saturday!) come and see THE LOVE LANGUAGE play in der Rathskeller at 9:30 with openers MERIDENE.
THE LOVE LANGUAGE is comprised for lyrics and music plucked from the mind of Stuart McLamb, a North Carolina native. The music of The Love Language has a guitar-laden sound that is accented by adorable ‘60s backup singers. Though I would hesitate to liken him and his band too strongly to any certain artist, they bear a resemblance to the band Fanfarlo or early Phoenix. In April of this year, they will be playing at Coachella so it is highly suggested that you grab your chance to see them free while you can. Check out this very well-edited (by their label, Merge Records) video of one of their live performances:
Meridene is a band from our very own… Wisconsin! Meridene is a blossoming alternative band with all the regular staples of a four-piece band, blended neatly into catchy arrangements. They received this rave from the Onion AV Club: “the smart pop and joyous hooks…ensure that Meridene will hold people’s attention all on its own now that it has a foot in the door.”
For a raw taste of their sound, check out their Daytrotter session here. The good kind of raw. Like FRESH raw.
With a name like “Schwinntonation” can you really go wrong at all? Schwinntonation could be some kind of bike gang of suburban white boys that releases bad rap mixtapes, and with a name like that, I’d still probably defend them to people.
Even better, though, is that Schwinntonation is actually awesome. I’ve described the sound as “ambient sound experimentation made using bikes,” but that sounds ridiculous and pretentious, so let’s see what the Schwinntonation MySpace has to say.
“The project that is Schwinntonation takes the various sounds that bicycles can make and turns it into music.”
Does that sound like something that could be bad? Does this look like something that could be bad?
I don’t think so and neither should you.
These dudes are from Chicago, and I think they’re going to be at the Bicycle Film Festival in Minneapolis the summer, so hopefully I’ll be able to see them in June. They released their album for free, so I’m going to share it with you in its entirety, guilt-free.
I’m not sure how many of us watched the Grammy Awards with intense anticipation this Sunday, but none the less I feel that a god chunk of us felt the need to do so, mainly to see Lil’ Wayne and an extremely pregnant M.I.A.
Either way there were some awards that we would probably agree with, others not so much. So here is a quick analysis of the winners and should have been winners in a couple different categories, as well as a run down of some of the better and also bad performances.
Best Performance:
No one on the corner has swagga like this:
Like Lil’ Wayne’s other performance was alright and there were some other okay ones, but this is the only thing worth going back for a look again. Kinda like Kanye/Daft Punk last year.
Rap Category:
The top contenders were quite obviously Weezy F Baby, Hova, and Lupe…probably in that order. And the night ended in such an order as well. Wanye probably deserved the award for ‘Milli’ for sheer lyrically derived obscenity based genius, and possibly album of the year. But going up against ‘Superstar’ from Lupe in the Best Song category and a longshot from Jay-Z (‘Roc Boys’), ‘Lollipop’ probably didn’t deserve the look that it got.
Its hard to go up against The Carter III as album of the year for sheer album sales which is probably why it got the nod from the voting committees, but if you pull that away it probably should not have taken the gold. Although it is hard to go against The Cool as album of the year, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that American Gangster should have taken it home. The whole album is well constructed and is probably on of Jay’s better ventures. There wasn’t a standout radio track on the disc but there are about four tracks that are well worthy of mention (‘Hello Brooklyn’, ‘Roc Boys’, ‘Success’ and ‘Blue Magic’) and even the rest of the tracks hold themselves up creating a work that sits near the top of Hova’s discography.
Alternative Category:
Once again it was hard to not see In Rainbows taking it home in this, one award only, category. The only Alternative album to be up for Album of the Year was a shoo in for this award, and most likely deserved it being one of the only well rounded albums to actually get an award. Its contenders were good, Beck and Gnarls Barkely being the only two that really stood out…maybe Death Cab, but given Radiohead’s free download and also commercial success with this venture made it a fit for the award.
Dance Category:
Oh Daft Punk Oh Daft Punk, you will never fail to amuse. They won the award for ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” and for the Alive 2007 album. Both are good, and having Kanye steal your shit cant do any harm. All we wanna say: shout out Hot Chip.
Best Album:
So they did end up following their formula of predictability and gave the award to a classic Americana album made by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss (Americana by a British guy…I guess). Not to take away anything from the album which achieves what it does by taking an genre and essentially regenerating it through a simplistic edge, but lets be honest, we all saw it coming. The choices were good for the top spot, but once again predictability is the winner and once again proves that it is only worth watching if you know what performances might be good. Just read the winners online.
