why WUD Music is amazing: 2011 Lollapalooza Lineup

Ever look at the WUD music schedule only to think, “gee, I don’t know ANY of those bands!”?  Well, it’s happened to this blogger as well, so fear not, but keep in mind you may want to get to know them if you want to be ahead of your peers when it comes to the latest awesome music.

How can I make such a boastful statement?  Let’s cross-compare WUD’s most recent booking year with the August 2011 Lollapalooza lineup:

Mayer Hawthorne & the County, Gold Motel, Haley Bonar, Midnight Conspiracy, Maps & Atlases, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. all played here in the fall and all will participate in this Chicago music festival this August 5-7 in Grant Park.

yeah, baby.

Not to mention The Felice Brothers, who recently graced the new Sett, have a feature article in the latest issue of Spin magazine.

Not too shabby, eh?  Keep on attending our shows and we’ll keep giving you the best acts the music scene has to offer (usually for free)!

Saturday at Der Rath: Owen and Blessed Feathers

Saturday, January 29th, 9:30 PM at Der Rathskeller: Owen, solo project of Mike Kinsella, and Blessed Feathers.

Mike Kinsella, best known for his band American Football, has been in the Chicago indie scene since he was twelve when he joined his older brother, Tim Kinsella, in the band Cap’n Jazz.  His sound is commonly described as a complex work of acoustic guitar and lyrics occasionally featuring piano or drums.  He has worked with producers Brian Deck (Iron & Wine) and Tim Iseler (Wilco) while perfecting his sound for his latest album, New Leaves, which is said to feature “a more complex song structure and refined lyrical matter.”  Come see the peaceful and relaxing sound of Owen which Pitchfork calls “the new drug for the treatment of chronic insomnia.”

“Blessed Feathers is the result of restless songwriting by Donivan Berube, Jacquelyn Beaupre’ and Jordan Knowles. Just a couple of folks who write and sing songs in the kettled forests of southeast Wisconsin.” –Blessed Feathers bio

This weekend at der Rath: The Felix Culpa and a Bob Marley Birthday Bash!

FRIDAY, January 21st at 9:30pm in der Rathskeller, get your punk rock on with The Felix Culpa and Action Madison.

They call their music “art rock” because it combines a broad spectrum of emotions, heavy guitar riffs and crazy drums solos to give listeners a powerful experience of music consumption. Some reviews have compared their most recent album “Sever Your Roots” to Brand New’s “The Devil and God are Raging Inside”. The band released this album, their 3rd, in January 2010 and have since signed with No Sleep Records and will be re-releasing the album with a bonus EP on January 25th.

Then, SATURDAY, shake off those cold weather blues with The Roots Collective playing a Bob Marley Birthday Party at 9:30pm in der Rathskeller!

Legendary rastafarian Bob Marley’s birthday of February 6th is fast-approaching, and what better way to pay tribute to this inspirational reggae guru than by throwing him a party??  Madison’s own Roots Collective will be covering some of Marley’s greatest hits that will warm you straight through with sounds so summery you’ll think the Sun Is Shining.  Come get swept away from the stinging snow while singing happy birthday to Jamaica’s pride and joy.

enjoy,

Jaime

oven freshly announced and almost ready to enjoy: In Tall Buildings

Friday, February 4th open your ears to the vastly layered rock music of In Tall Buildings as he blows in from the windy city of Chi-town to grace der Rath with his melodious craftings. Show starts 9:30pm.

After releasing a self-titled album in April 2010, In Tall Buildings (featuring Eric Hall of NOMO, Saturday Looks Good to Me and His Name is Alive) has gained acclaim for a modern take on pop music. With a new album anticipated for early spring, the band played Tomorrow Never Knows Festival in Chicago and will be featured in Denton, TX, at 35 Conferette. With press from the Chicago Tribune, Austin Town Hall, and the Chicago Reader, In Tall Buildings is on track to be one of Chicago’s best-loved exports.

In Tall Buildings, aka Erik Hall. "Erik's lyrics unveil a personal world through stark imagery: a monster's lair, a bed of soft linens, a spilled glass of wine, a shared whiskey bottle, a plummeting star, and a walking man."

Happy New Year, New Jersey!

So New Jersey has received some attention lately due to “Jersey Shore”, but the Garden State has some other great exports in 2k9.

I spent NYE watching the wonderfully ubiquitous reality show (new episode, yessss!), being really festive because I actually traveled to New Jersey TODAY to spend a few days in Princeton with Molly Lloyd, who is actually responsible for making sure this blog runs itself smoothly.

Other than Molly and “Jersey Shore,” NJ lays claim to one of WUD’s favorite bands: Real Estate. With links to UW grad student Julian Lynch, who we love to book, as well as a bunch of other Garden State and Brooklyn acts, Real Estate gets quite  a bit of love from blogs of the GvB ilk and in the words of John Ash, have a “space house” on their CD jewel case. They played der Rath the weekend of the Michigan game, and needless to say, it was a great show, if a bit sparsely attended.

Just a reminder not to forget the good things about New Jersey, 2009, and space houses.

Real Estate (they have a wikipedia entry. that’s big time.)

http://www.myspace.com/realestate <- yeah, that, do it to it.

love and kisses

sunday=procrastination

i think that’s a universal truth for college students. my procrastinating led me to the itunes store (you can only look at your facebook newsfeed so much right?). today i found an ep on the indie spotlight called the recordings of the middle east by the middle east. check out the music video below of their song “blood”.

it’s kind of reminds me of a grade school art project i had to do one time. or at least tried to do. mine didn’t turn out that good.

rock on folks,
