This weekend at der Rath: The Felix Culpa and a Bob Marley Birthday Bash!

FRIDAY, January 21st at 9:30pm in der Rathskeller, get your punk rock on with The Felix Culpa and Action Madison.

They call their music “art rock” because it combines a broad spectrum of emotions, heavy guitar riffs and crazy drums solos to give listeners a powerful experience of music consumption. Some reviews have compared their most recent album “Sever Your Roots” to Brand New’s “The Devil and God are Raging Inside”. The band released this album, their 3rd, in January 2010 and have since signed with No Sleep Records and will be re-releasing the album with a bonus EP on January 25th.

Then, SATURDAY, shake off those cold weather blues with The Roots Collective playing a Bob Marley Birthday Party at 9:30pm in der Rathskeller!

Legendary rastafarian Bob Marley’s birthday of February 6th is fast-approaching, and what better way to pay tribute to this inspirational reggae guru than by throwing him a party??  Madison’s own Roots Collective will be covering some of Marley’s greatest hits that will warm you straight through with sounds so summery you’ll think the Sun Is Shining.  Come get swept away from the stinging snow while singing happy birthday to Jamaica’s pride and joy.

enjoy,

Jaime

Setting the Record Straight

Wow! Have I ever been happier to see a weekend come to its conclusion!

Initially, I was looking forward to the weekend of shows we had: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, WAVVES and Heiruspecs. Not bad for a bunch of college “kids” I’d say.

On Friday at Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin I told Sam I was actually going to stand in front and enjoy myself at the show and he was cool with it. Everything was going really well until a few songs into Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin’s set, two obviously drunk and obviously underage kids decided to jump up on stage and become part of the performance (I’m sorry I don’t have pictures). It resulted in me conferring with Sam and running up to the office to get my badge to show my authority and a few seconds deliberation with the band leading to a quick stifling of the two drunk underagers’ antics. Both Sam and I had to pull them off stage multiple times. By the end of the show we decided to send one of them packing which compelled him to call me an “ass” and give both of us the gooney bird. By the way, this was on Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin’s twitter: “driving to Dekalb. Last two shows have been like Girl Talk shows , but with way better music.”

On Saturday at WAVVES, Brandon, John and I must have turned away at least 50-75 people from The Project Lodge (capacity of 75). That was to be expected but you don’t expect when telling someone “sorry, we’re at capacity and not letting anyone in right now” that it is up for discussion. Do people in Madison have a sense of entitlement or is that just the frame of mind that free shows create? I don’t know how many times I had to argue with people about why they couldn’t come in.

“Dude, I have a ticket. You’re letting in people without tickets.”

“Well, if you would have read what was on the ticket, you would have realized that it was only good until 7:30pm and it is now 8:30pm.”

“I guess I didn’t realize…”

“Well, that’s why you aren’t getting into the show right now.”

What drives me nuts is that if a show was sold out at the High Noon Saloon, you wouldn’t be arguing with the doorman about what that means and that you should get to go in anyways.

There were also some local Madison musicians who thought they could subvert the system and either sneak in the back door (Zola Jesus, Burial Hex) or bum rush the front door (Deep Shit) at 10pm when WAVVES went on even though everyone else who got into the show had been waiting since 7pm to see WAVVES. Is there an unwritten code about shitty local bands thinking the world owes them something? I encourage you though to listen to “Sea Talk” by Zola Jesus. It is a really good song.

The real kicker of the night was WAVVES’ Nathan Williams only leaving his van for the 25 minutes it took him to play his set, then ducking into the alley to smoke a joint and then back into the van.  He didn’t even help load-in, albeit he was sick. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. People seemed to have fun and walked away pleased.

How was Heiruspecs? I couldn’t make it. Too exhausted. At least I made it out of the weekend in one piece.

Awesome Car Funmaker – 2/13/09 – Der Rathskeller

n715776243_1898268_7611

As far as history goes, there are some pretty definitive historical events that we can all agree on as important to the history of the rock and roll movement itself. August 29, 1966, The Beatles played their last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. June 8, 1974, Keyboardist Rick Wakeman quit the rock group “Yes”. 1987, Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx was revived after OD’ing. Summer of ’99, Woodstock 99. You get the idea. Anyways, wouldn’t it be awesome to be a part of rock history? Well, look no further because you can this Friday at Der Rathskeller in the UW Memorial Union. Madison’s favorite Pop/Hyph/Glam band, Awesome Car Funmaker, will be performing their last show ever! After touring the planet extensively for 6 years, the band is deciding to call it quits, following this show.

According to their myspace, ACF is known to “put on a theatrical show that consists of choreographed kicks, gallops, and jumping jacks.” Talk about zany! They also play some pretty catchy tunes and are guaranteed to get everyone on their feet.

All in all this show is sure to go down as one of the most important shows in rock and roll history and cannot be missed! Just imagine how jealous your friends will be when you tell them you not only saw the legendary ACF, but witnessed their last show ever! To reiterate, the show is on Friday February 13, 2009 at Der Rathskeller in the UW Memorial Union. The show will begin at 9:00 PM when opener Apparently Nothing will take the stage and will end at approximately midnight. This is an all ages show and best of all it’s FREE, FREE, FREE! Come on down, and bring your friends, to enjoy what is bound to be one of the most fun concerts you will see in all of February!

ACF will also be giving out free copies of their latest release E FOR EVERYONE!

Head  on over to the Facebook page for more info.  While you’re there, why not request a song for the show?

Los Campesinos! & Titus Andronicus

Los Campesinos! w/ Titus Andronicus
Friday, February 6
9:00pm
FREE

A friend recently told me he’s so excited for the Los Campesinos! show this Friday that he’s been waking up in the middle of the night.  I think a good number of people across campus share similar feelings about this concert. This is arguably one of the biggest WUD Music concerts since we saw Hollywood Holt and Million $ Mano in November so I’d recommend getting a spot up front early because this is going to pack the Rathskeller, and fast. Plus, who can argue with an opener as awesome as Titus Andronicus? I’m every bit as stoked to see them play.

Both Los Campesinos! and Titus Andronicus are touring in support of incredible records (all nestled comfortably in the 8.3,4,5 spots on Pitchfork’s harsh album rating scale). This is guaranteed to be a high energy show. Both bands have awesome stage presence…when Titus Andronicus played at Club 770 with No Age last fall, Patrick Stickles (frontman) body surfed all the way to the end of the crowd and back, among doing other assorted zany things.

The show starts at 9:00 and is at Der Rathskeller in Memorial Union. As always, the show is free (!!!)
